Emergence of communication in embodied agents: co-adapting communicative and non-communicative behaviours
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper I discuss in which conditions a population of embodied and situated agents that have to solve problems that requires cooperation might develop forms of ritualized interaction and communication. After reviewing the most relevant literature I will try to identify the the main open research problems and the most promising research directions. More specifially I will discuss: (a) the type of problems, the agents’ characteristics, and the environmental/social conditions that might facilitate the emergence of an ability to interact and communicate, and (b) the behavioral and cognitive capabilities that are crucial for the development of forms of communication of different complexity.

Impoliteness: The Ghanaian Standpoint
This paper highlights the folk perception of impoliteness among Ghanaians in view of Watts’ (2003) notion of first order impoliteness. The study showed that impoliteness is not just an opposite of politeness, but the manifestation of non-cooperation, disapproval, and mutual antipathy through certain communicative behaviours that signal disrespect. These communicative behaviours include ‘interru...
متن کاملEmergence of Communication in Teams of Embodied and Situated Agents
In this paper we will describe the results of an experiment in which an effective communication system arises among a collection of initially non-communicating agents through a self-organization process based on an evolutionary process. Evolved agents communicate by producing and detecting five different signals that affect both their motor and signaling behavior. These signals identify feature...
متن کاملEmergence of communication in embodied agents evolved for the ability to solve a collective navigation problem
In this paper we present the results of an experiment in which a collection of simulated robots that are evolved for the ability to solve a collective navigation problem develop a communication system that allows them to better cooperate. The analysis of the obtained results indicates how evolving robots develop a non-trivial communication system and exploit different communication modalities. ...
متن کاملNon-Verbal Communication in Models of Communicative Competence and L2 Teachers’ Rating
Non-verbal communication (NVC) plays a major role in various aspects of human life (Andersen, 2004; Cameron, 2001; Johnstone, 2008). Children learning their first language come to realize non-verbal communication as their socialization process takes place (Fletcher & German, 1990; Ingram, 1996; Owens, 2001). However, most EFL learners may have little exposure to these non-verbal aspects of comm...
متن کاملEvolving Communication without Dedicated Communication Channels
Artificial Life models have consistently implemented communication as an exchange of signals over dedicated and functionally isolated channels. I argue that such a feature prevents models from providing a satisfactory account of the origins of communication and present a model in which there are no dedicated channels. Agents controlled by neural networks and equipped with proximity sensors and ...
